Are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra Safe for Heart Patients?

Popular impotence treatment drugs, Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, have been extensively studied in men suffering from different types of heart diseases. Though in most cases, the drugs have been found to be safe, experts’ advice a lot of caution. The bottom line is that any of the impotence drugs, be it Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, should never be taken by men using any form of nitrate medicines including nitro-glycerine tablets and spray, long-acting nitrate tablets, nitrate patches and amyl nitrate. However, the impotence drugs are found to be quite safe for men who do not take nitrates, even if they have stable coronary artery disease or well-controlled hypertension.
The 2 reasons why the action of impotence treatment drug is of consequence for people with heart diseases is that – it can lower the blood pressure and interact with nitrates. Impotence pills such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra acts as vasodilator, which means they help the blood vessels to dilate so that more blood can rush in to your genitals and cause erection. As a result, these drugs can lower your systolic blood pressure by an average of 8mmHg.
Studies have shown that in heart patients taking antihypertensive drugs but not nitrates, impotence drugs may not cause any problem or increase the incidence of side effects related to low blood pressure such as such as dizziness and fainting. However, the vasodilating effects of impotence pills may prove to be potentially dangerous when combined with the vasodilating effects of nitrates. Patients who use nitrates in conjunction with impotence pills such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra are at increased risk of developing severe hypotension (low blood pressure) and syncope (fainting.) Patients taking nitrates for their coronary artery disease, therefore, should never take Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. Further, if patients have taken impotence pills such as Viagra or Levitra during the past 24 hours they should not take nitrates. As the effect of Cialis remains in the body for 36 hours, they should not take nitrates until 48 hours of taking Cialis.
While nitrates were a popular choice of drug for the treatment of coronary artery disease in the past, it is no longer the case now. Coronary artery disease is now manageable without resorting to nitrates. However, patients who have been prescribed nitrates but wish to take impotence pills should consult their doctors for alternate forms of therapy for their coronary artery disease before using Viagra, Cialis or Levitra for impotence treatment.
